Lorcan McNamee – A Year in Lisbon

Irish writer Lorcan McNamee will talk about – and read from – his new novel A Year in Lisbon in Bookshop Bivar on Sunday 6 November at 6pm.

The novel charts a year in the life of English teacher, Cian O’Dwyer, who “ends up” in Lisbon, after escaping from a romantic failure in Dublin.

A Year in Lisbon is a coming-of-age story, an exploration of the joys and challenges of living in a new country, and a portrait of the city of Lisbon from the perspective of an outsider.

It also provides a wry and humorous look at the world of English language teaching. Cian works in The London School, where all is not as it seems on the surface.

The author himself worked as an English teacher in Lisbon in the 1990s, and so the novel – although fiction – is informed by his own experiences of the city. Lorcan McNamee currently lives in the west of Ireland, where he is a language teacher.
